Porcelain Crowns

A porcelain crown is a common dental restoration used to fully cover the tooth (Cap) in order to restore it to its original form and function. There are many reasons a crown is used to restore the tooth. Crowns are needed when there is tooth decay present underneath a large dental filling that can threaten the health of the tooth. Teeth with root canal therapy are also restored with crowns. Crowns are also the treatment of choice in situations where tooth decay has destroyed most of the original tooth, when a traumatic event (fractured tooth) has caused damage, or in cases of severe enamel erosion.

Partial crowns are often referred to as onlays/inlays. Porcelain Onlays are a type of restoration or dental filling that covers one or more cusps. However, an inlay is similar to a dental filling but the work resides completely within the cusps on a tooth’s chewing surface and the cusp of the tooth is not involved. These restorations are much more conservative than crowns, and can be imperceptible from your natural tooth.

Porcelain crowns are very durable and natural looking; however, they do not have the flexibility of natural teeth, so avoiding certain foods may be necessary. Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, Dr. Ebrahimi, recommends chronic tooth-grinders (bruxers) and jaw-clenchers to be fitted with a night-guard to protect the porcelain from unnecessary and excessive pressure and use. Nightly use of this device will protect the patient's teeth from excessive wear.
