Fluoride is a mineral that helps prevent tooth decay caused by acid producing bacteria that collects around the teeth and gums (plaque). There are two forms of topical fluoride treatments:
1. Professional fluoride treatment applied at dental office.
Professional fluoride treatments are used for patients who are at a moderate to high risk of developing tooth decay. It only takes a few minutes, usually applied after your dental cleaning. It may be in the form of a solution, gel, foam or varnish. Dr. Ebrahimi will ask you not to eat or drink for at least 30 minuted to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride and help repair microscopic decay areas. Depending on your oral health this may be repeated every 4 to 6 months.
2. Over the counter fluoride treatment
Over the counter fluoride is usually used by patients with a lower risk of developing tooth decay. It is in the form of mouthwash.
Although each patient's case is different, Dr. Ebrahimi DDS recommends professional fluoride treatment every 4 to 6 months for patients who are in high risk of developing tooth decay. Fluoride treatment can also be done at home on a daily bases using toothpaste with fluoride and/or fluoride rinses to prevent tooth decay.
